NOVEMBER 2020
Prairie is essentially a lieu-dit, a named place. A plot slightly set apart, along from Marsau, with only a narrow country lane separating the two. Just a few metres in fact, and yet worlds apart…be it the surrounding countryside, the identity of the terroir, or the personality of the resulting wines.
It took time to really understand it, for Prairie is the story of a vineyard that came of age almost without us realising. Fast forward 2019, and everything came into focus.
“Until we meet again…”
The Prairie landscape made its presence felt, resplendent in glorious technicolour, joyously exuding a unique kind of energy. And with it, the desire to encapsulate all this in a bottle and create a different wine to Marsau; standalone and complete. A wine synonymous with great joy and reunion, imbued with a simple idea: “Until we meet again…”
And to take this even further, we wanted Prairie to have a distinctive, liberated look and feel.
The desire
to encapsulate
all this in a bottle
and create a
different wine
to Marsau…
The last time our paths had crossed was a few years previously. By pure chance, Pauline Taugourdeau was drawn to Marsau during the harvest, for a chance to discover its landscapes, soak up its splendour and lay the initial foundations of our friendship. High on her wish list, among other fascinating ideas, was to one day design a wine label.
Which is how we came up with the idea of commissioning Pauline to create a work inspired by Prairie, that would feature on the label of this original wine.
We wanted to decant a landscape in a bottle; it was up to Pauline to immortalise its very essence in just a few brushstrokes and splashes of colour.
By delving into her extra-fine gouache palette, and playing with the fluidity to work the nuances on paper, Pauline has graced Prairie with the shimmering iridescence of a butterfly in flight, like an outpouring of emotions already proclaiming the bottle’s inner secrets. An invitation. A taste of what’s to come. And for us, confirming the obvious: Prairie was destined to see the light of day.
« Essentially, I wanted
to be influenced by
the location rather
than my own free will,
to draw an impression
somewhere between
the soils, the terroir
and the sky, with a vast
prairie in front of the vines,
bathed in warm colours
and a profusion of light. »
