AN ENCOUNTER
WITH THE 2018 VINTAGE
2018 is the start of a new story. The year that sealed our commitment to the Marsau adventure. And what an adventure! We scrutinised every aspect of the locality.
The landscape, the soils, the clay, the materials, the infinitely small and all living matter. We are spending increasing amounts of time at Marsau, and making use of all the available space. The children explore and engage with their surrounds. We are all united in this endeavour.
It’s the start of a new life. Here, we want to see the sun rise, stroll endlessly through the vine rows, gaze at the stars, wander bare foot among the wild herbs, build cabins and plant trees… 2018 was also the year we set upon the path of organic agriculture, and remain resolute in our decision.
Our journey through the vintage has been no less than turbulent. Yields looked extremely low from early spring – a disastrous spring in fact.
Disruption, storms and
strong winds.
Marsau sometimes feels strangely like Brittany, out on the headland, exposed to the elements. The onslaught of the weather makes us feel desperately isolated.
While not emerging from our passage unscathed, the ordeal has merely served to strengthen our resolve. The path we have chosen is rocky and not without challenge. We must see it through to the end. Marsau 2018 is in extremely short supply. Yet having braved the storm, our vines have yielded a great Marsau.
Essential, a huge source of energy, brilliance, depth and sensuality. Marsau 2018 is the unique light on a summer’s day when the sun sinks towards the horizon and pierces blindingly through the clouds. A light so drenched in colour and contrast that it transforms the landscape. A soft, all-consuming, fragrant light.
In the wine, the darkness
of the vintage has assumed
a poignant beauty.
An outrenoir, beyond black.
We are embarking upon a new chapter. We have lived through such an intense, turbulent year, yet rich with encounters and so full of energy. In such a momentous year, there is always a before and after. We felt duty bound to immortalise the 2018 vintage, featuring only the finest artwork on the label. Three striking works in total, by Ronan Bouroullec.
Ronan Bourollec is a designer. We are vignerons.
Both fields are defined by shape, materials, sense and senses. In both spheres, creation. In both lifelong pursuits, the search for beauty. And between us, Ronan Bouroullec and Marsau, we find Anne-Laurence’s roots, the region of Brittany, its colours and the Chemin des Douaniers coastal path, the search for the essential and sensibility. Through these three selected works, Ronan Bouroullec shares his personal interpretation of our story and celebrates the three forms of life and energy that essentially underscore so indelibly the creation of our wines:
_______ The clay soils, the furrows, textures, depth and waves.
Beneath.
_______ The plants, their mysteries, nuances, an abundance of different forms, renewal and light.
Above.
_______ The fruit, sweetness, sensuality, softness, fragrance.
Inside.
